Tumbling Information for Beginners - videos, articles and FAQ

Buying a tumbler can be a little confusing so please review the following information to help make the job a little easier.

Your tumblers will come with instructions and guidance on recommended grit cycles - this is a good starting point. We offer a range of Starter Kits - see the table below for more details:

  • Kit A Rotary - 500g each of #80, #220 and #600 silicon carbide, 250g cerium oxide and 250g plastic pellets
  • Kit B Rotary500g each of #80, #220 and #600 silicon carbide, 500g of #1500 alumina, 250g tin oxide and 250g plastic pellets
  • Kit C Vibratory - 500g each of #220 and #600 silicon carbide, 500g of #1500 alumina and 250g cerium oxide
  • Kit D Vibratory - 500g each of #220 and #600 silicon carbide, 500g of #1500 alumina, 250g tin oxide and 1kg porcelain media

We recommend either Kit A or C with Cerium Oxide polish when tumbling material in the 6 to 7 hardness range. If tumbling harder material (up to 8 hardness), Kits B or D are more suitable. If polishing metal such as silver jewellery or the like, you will need the Jewellery Polishing Kit instead.

NOTE:  buying grit in 1kg lots is cheaper than the starter kits so once you get started, we recommend stocking up as required - you will find that you will use more of some types of grit than others.
