Dichroscopes are used to show dichroism or pleichroism in gemstones.  This can be helpful in differentiating stones of the same color from one another.  Dichroscopes are useful for identifying gemstones that are still in the rough or if stones are set and difficult to get to with other instruments.

  • Type - calcite
  • Diameter 15mm and Length 60mm
  • Metal Body
  • Leather Storage Case

  1. Hold the upper portion of the dichroscope to your eye
  2. Hold and place the gemstone flush to the opening.  The hexagonal shape at the end makes it easier to turn the dichroscope during idenification.
  3. Identify Pleochroism by slowly turning the dichroscope hexagonal end slowly one full rotation.  Pay close attention to any color differentiation between the two small squares visible inside the dichroscope during the rotation. The number of different colors determines the refractivity and pleochroic properties of the stone.
  4. Repeat the rotation to double check the count.  If you do not see color changes, turn the gemstone to several other angles and repeat.  Sometimes pleochroism only shows on a particular axis of the gem
